FAQs
A replica of Mr. Red made in a more durable material
A new companion piece inspired by the original
The relocation of another artwork from the City’s collection
Or an entirely new sculpture that reflects Sarasota’s creativity and resilience
Why can’t Mr. Red be returned to its previous location?
The sculpture’s former location near Gulfstream Avenue and Cocoanut Avenue is highly exposed to salt air, strong winds, and storm surge from the nearby bayfront. Mr. Red was torn from its base during Hurricane Milton in 2024 and sustained severe damage. Because of these conditions, reinstalling the piece at that location would likely result in further damage beyond repair.
What caused the recent damage?
Mr. Red has experienced repeated hurricane-related damage over time. Despite restoration efforts and the installation of a raised pad after Hurricane Ian, the sculpture’s painted aluminum construction and its location near open water made it vulnerable to high winds, storm surge, and water intrusion. These environmental factors contributed to the extensive damage during Hurricane Milton.
Why was City Hall chosen for relocation?
City Hall offers a secure, high-visibility setting that is regularly monitored by City staff and security cameras. The location is protected from the severe wind exposure and saltwater intrusion that affected the Gulfstream site, giving Mr. Red the best possible conditions for long-term outdoor display.
Is the original artist involved in the relocation or replacement?
The artist, David Langley, has passed away. His work remains a valued part of Sarasota’s public art collection, and the City is committed to preserving and honoring his artistic legacy through the careful relocation and repair of Mr. Red.
What is the condition of the sculpture now?
Following Hurricane Milton, Mr. Red was collected and placed in secure storage while the City assessed repair options and potential new locations. The sculpture will be repaired and relocated to City Hall following the Public Art Committee’s August 6 approval.
What will replace Mr. Red at Gulfstream Avenue?
The City of Sarasota Public Art Program is inviting community input to help determine what comes next. Possible directions include:
Q: Is the City able to recreate the original sculpture, and are there any copyright concerns?
Under the City’s agreement with the artist, his rights concluded upon his passing, allowing the City to recreate or reinterpret the sculpture. The City will also honor the artist by acknowledging his work and making clear that the new piece is a tribute to the original.
How can the public share ideas?
Community members can share their thoughts and ideas through the online input form on this page. Feedback will be collected and shared with the Public Art Committee as part of the planning process for the next artwork at the Gulfstream site.
When will the new artwork be selected?
Community feedback will be gathered through fall 2025. The Public Art Committee will review ideas in early 2026, with selection and design planning to follow.
