Project Description
This project will reconstruct the St. Armands Circle roadway system (SR 789), including all five approach legs. The reconstruction will revitalize the corridor to improve safety, accessibility, and aesthetics for all users. The project includes upgrades to sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb ramps; integration of traffic calming features; resurfacing of the travel lanes; and enhancements to pedestrian and streetscape elements within the Circle.
Purpose and Need
St. Armands Circle is a key commercial and tourism destination within the City of Sarasota. The existing pavement and pedestrian infrastructure are nearing the end of their service life, and the area experiences high pedestrian activity and seasonal traffic congestion. This project is needed to improve the condition of the roadway and enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and comfort while maintaining traffic circulation and supporting the economic vitality of the district.
Proposed Improvements
Roadway resurfacing and geometric refinements around the Circle and its five approach legs
Replacement and widening of deteriorated sidewalks and curb ramps to meet ADA standards
Enhanced crosswalk treatments and pedestrian refuge areas
Incorporation of traffic calming measures (e.g., curb extensions, raised crosswalks, or speed management elements)
Drainage, lighting, and landscape improvements consistent with FDOT and City design standards
Project Limits
SR 789 (St. Armands Circle) - including all five approach legs
North – Pansy Bayou
West – Polk Dr
South – S Washington Dr
East – Little Ringling Bridge
Anticipated Benefits
Improved safety and accessibility for pedestrians and motorists
Extended pavement service life and reduced maintenance needs
Enhanced aesthetics and visitor experience within the St. Armands commercial district
Support for multimodal connectivity between Lido Key, downtown Sarasota, and the barrier islands
