Project Description

The City of Sarasota has been working with Kittelson and Associates to perform the Circus Trail Extension project's planning, environmental assessment, and 30% design. The project limits begin halfway through the existing Circus Trail, remain on the east side of Circus Boulevard, go into Bobby Jones and terminate a few feet from Sarasota County's 17th Street Park. The existing Circus Trail starts at the corner of Fruitville Road and Beneva Road. See Figure 1 below for the alignment.

Project History

The City of Sarasota’s Transportation Master Plan, Sarasota in Motion (SiM), identified trails network expansion as the #1 priority. As part of this plan, the City has developed the Legacy Trail Network, where connecting the Legacy Trail to Bobby Jones Golf Course (BJGC) was one of the trail priorities identified. The connection to BJGC is part of the Gulf Coast Trail found in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection – Office of Greenways and Trails map. This trail would connect residents and tourists from Venice, FL, to the City of Sarasota, Sarasota County, and eventually be part of Florida’s regional trail system. The City Commission has adopted a plan to transform a large portion of BJGC into a nature park and conservation area, providing an opportunity for the City to connect BJGC with Sarasota County’s 17th Street Park through this trail system.

Public Engagement

The City of Sarasota hosted a public meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 to share the progress of the Circus Trail Extension and gather community feedback.
