Project Description

The City of Sarasota’s Transportation Master Plan, Sarasota in Motion (SiM) identified trail network expansion as the #1 priority. As part of this plan, the City has developed the Legacy Trail Network where Legacy Trail to Bobby Jones Golf Course (BJGC) was one of the primary connectors. The BJGC connector is part of the Gulf Coast Trail found in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection – Office of Greenways and Trails map. This trail would connect residents and tourists from Venice, FL to the City of Sarasota, Sarasota County, and eventually be part of Florida’s regional trail system. The City Commission has adopted a plan to turn a large portion of BJGC into a nature park and conservation area where the City has an opportunity to connect BJGC with Sarasota County’s 17th Street Park by using this trail system.

The City of Sarasota is working with Kittelson and Associates to study the area of the proposed alignments to accurately determine the trail connection. The project has been divided into two areas:

  • North of Fruitville Road - Circus Trail Extension
  • South of Fruitville Road - Beneva/Eastwood Alignment

The South of Fruitville Road area started with a Pre-Study to evaluate potential alignments to connect to the existing Circus Trail found North of Fruitville Road.

South of Fruitville Road

As part of the Pre-Study, two alignments were evaluated for the connector from the current Legacy Trail alignment to the BJGC. The first alignment (shown in orange) is located along an old railroad property now owned by the City and County, providing a safe, alternative route for pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility opportunities to access essential services, parks, and other amenities. The second alignment (shown in blue) is along Beneva Road, a high-speed/volume arterial with a history of pedestrian/bicycle crashes. The Pre-Study will focus on the alignments south of Fruitville Road first. Future studies will be programmed based on the outcomes of this Pre-Study. The conceptual locations of the proposed trail alignments can be seen in the image below.

North of Fruitville Road - Circus Trail Extension

The City of Sarasota has begun the Project Development and Environmental (PD&E) phase for the area North of Fruitville Road. The map below depicts a preliminary trail alignment for the extension of Circus Trail.
