Project Description

The City of Sarasota intends to construct a “complete street” on Shade Avenue from City limits (Hibiscus Street) to 15th Street. A complete street is an Age-Friendly design that promotes safe travel to and from destinations, whether walking, biking, riding transit, or driving a vehicle. Each complete street is unique to the community and can include different features like enhanced sidewalks, street lighting, street trees and landscaping, public art, and more. Please take this opportunity to share your ideas that will help transform Shade Avenue.

Public Engagement

Shade Avenue Complete Streets Neighborhood Meeting

The City of Sarasota hosted a neighborhood meeting on August 23, 2022, to present the Shade Avenue Complete Streets project, its limits, and scope of work. The presentation can be found under the Project Documents tab.

Shade Avenue Complete Streets Survey #1

The City of Sarasota began the planning phase of Shade Avenue Complete Street, the number 4 priority in Sarasota in Motion. As a means of incorporating the public vision for this street, the City will be conducting several opportunities for citizen input and involvement. The first opportunity is a public survey to understand the values, preferences, and concerns of citizens related to Shade Avenue.

Shade Avenue Complete Streets Survey #2

The City of Sarasota listened closely to the community, and based on the feedback, there's a plan to potentially remove the traffic circle at Shade Avenue and Novus Street. The City of Sarasota provided a survey to determine what type of improvements should be implemented at the intersection of Shade Avenue and Novus Street. Raised crosswalks, traffic separators, and a combination of both were the 3 options provided. Overall, the community felt like the combination of both the raised crosswalks and traffic separators was the best option.
