Project Description

The City of Sarasota intends to construct a “complete street” on Shade Avenue from City limits (Hibiscus Street) to 15th Street. A complete street is an Age-Friendly design that promotes safe travel to and from destinations, whether walking, biking, riding transit, or driving a vehicle. Each complete street is unique to the community and can include different features like enhanced sidewalks, street lighting, street trees and landscaping, public art, and more. Please take this opportunity to share your ideas that will help transform Shade Avenue.

Shade Avenue Complete Streets Survey #1

The City of Sarasota began the planning phase of Shade Avenue Complete Street, the number 4 priority in Sarasota in Motion. As a means of incorporating the public vision for this street, the City will be conducting several opportunities for citizen input and involvement. The first opportunity is a public survey to understand the values, preferences, and concerns of citizens related to Shade Avenue.

Shade Avenue Complete Streets Survey #2

The City of Sarasota listened closely to the community, and based on the feedback, there's a plan to potentially remove the traffic circle at Shade Avenue and Novus Street. The City of Sarasota provided a survey to determine what type of improvements should be implemented at the intersection of Shade Avenue and Novus Street. Raised crosswalks, traffic separators, and a combination of both were the 3 options provided. Overall, the community felt like the combination of both the raised crosswalks and traffic separators was the best option.

City planners are seeking input about three possible alternatives from the public in an online survey.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Sarasota city officials want to hear from people who live in the Shade Avenue corridor near the Legacy Trail.

The city has launched an online survey to crowd-source suggestions on what to do about the traffic circle at a small intersection along that road.

Many neighbors said it is a problem area and drivers are not paying attention to the signs alerting them about the circle.

Planners are asking to hear from those who live or travel along Shade by Wednesday, Aug. 31.

A “complete street” is designed to create safe options for multiple types of transportation; creating more such streets is part of the city’s goal of eliminating pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. An individual can bike, walk or drive more safely on these roadways, which are designed for people from age 8 to 80. They are often more beautiful, as well.

The city wants to hear from anyone who regularly uses Shade Avenue. The survey—which should only take between five and 10 minutes to complete—is open through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.
