What’s Happening?
The City of Sarasota is updating the Transportation Chapter of the Sarasota City Plan, the City’s state-mandated Comprehensive Plan.
The Sarasota City Plan is a long-range policy document that guides decisions about land use, transportation, and other key aspects of community growth and development
The Florida Community Planning Act requires all cities and counties to review and update their comprehensive plans periodically. This helps make sure long-term planning stays in step with current needs, growth, and community priorities.
The Transportation Chapter update will build on the approved Sarasota in Motion - Transportation Master Plan and will be shaped by community input.
Recently, the City of Sarasota updated the Engineering Design Criteria Manual—an important document that provides criteria and guidelines for designing the City’s right-of-way and areas within its limits. Elements of these criteria and guidelines need to be integrated into the Sarasota City Plan to ensure consistency and continuity.
Why It Matters
Transportation touches every part of life.
This update is our community’s opportunity to shape a healthier, more connected Sarasota, where getting around is safer, easier, and works for everyone. The Transportation Chapter update focuses on:
- Identifying and addressing safety issues in the city’s transportation network
- Ensuring the system works for everyone, including seniors, children, people with disabilities, and those without a car
- Expanding transportation options and improving connections to make it easier to reach jobs, schools, parks, and other key destinations
- Reducing traffic congestion by promoting alternatives to driving alone—like biking, walking, and using transit
- Supporting efficient travel and smarter use of our roadways
- Strengthening business districts and neighborhoods through access and mobility
